If your business sends SMS messages to customers in India — whether for OTP, promotions, order updates, or alerts — DLT registration is mandatory as per TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) regulations. Without DLT registration, your SMS campaigns will be blocked by telecom operators.

In this guide, we walk you through the complete DLT registration process — from choosing the right portal to registering your SMS templates — so you can start sending compliant messages without delays.

What is DLT Registration?

DLT stands for Distributed Ledger Technology. TRAI introduced the DLT framework in 2019 to curb unsolicited commercial communications (spam SMS) in India. Under this system, every business (called a "Principal Entity") that wants to send commercial SMS must:

  • Register their company/brand on the DLT portal
  • Register their Sender IDs (Header)
  • Register each SMS template they plan to send

Which DLT Portal Should You Register On?

Multiple telecom operators run their own DLT portals. You only need to register on one portal — your registration syncs across all operators automatically.

Operator Portal URL Best For
Airtel https://dltconnect.airtel.in/ Most popular, easy UI
Videocon https://smartping.live/ Most popular, easy UI
Jio https://trueconnect.jio.com/ Fast approval
Vodafone-Idea (Vi) https://www.vilpower.in/ Vi customers
BSNL https://www.ucc-bsnl.co.in/ Govt entities

Documents Required for DLT Registration

Keep these documents ready before starting registration:

For Private Limited / LLP

  • Certificate of Incorporation
  • PAN Card (Company)
  • GST Certificate
  • Authorized Signatory ID proof

For Proprietorship / Individual

  • Aadhaar Card
  • PAN Card (Personal)
  • GST Certificate (if applicable)
  • Business address proof

Step-by-Step DLT Registration Process

1

Visit the DLT Portal & Create Account

Go to your chosen portal (e.g., dltconnect.airtel.in). Click on Register as Principal Entity. Enter your business email, mobile number, and create a password.

2

Select Entity Type

Choose your entity type: Enterprise, Government, or Individual/Proprietorship. This affects which documents you'll need to upload.

3

Upload Business Documents

Upload scanned copies of your PAN, GST certificate, and incorporation documents. Ensure files are clear and under 2MB each (PDF or JPG format).

4

Register Your Sender ID (Header)

A Sender ID is the name that appears on the recipient's phone (e.g., INFYRC for InfyReach Connect). It must be 6 characters for commercial SMS. Choose a name that clearly represents your brand.

5

Register SMS Templates

Every SMS message format must be pre-registered. Use {#var#} for variable parts. Example:
Your OTP for login is {#var#}. Valid for 10 minutes. — INFYRC

6

Wait for Approval

Entity approval typically takes 2–5 business days. Template approval can take 24–72 hours. You'll receive confirmation via email and SMS once approved.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mismatched business name — Name on DLT must exactly match your GST/PAN documents
  • Wrong template category — Transactional, Promotional, and Service templates have different rules
  • Hardcoding variables — Always use {#var#} for dynamic content, never hardcode values
  • Sending without approved templates — Even after entity approval, templates must be separately approved
  • Using unapproved Sender ID — Your SMS provider must map the exact approved Sender ID
